Leaning to Ride F.A.Qs

Fuel economy: 80 - 100 mpg.

Insurance: There are numerous variables that affect your insurance (location, garage, insurance history). We recommend getting a few quotes before committing to an insurer. We regularly use Lexham and MCE.

Maintenance: Many maintenance items are related to mileage and the way you use your bike (for example do you use your scooter for short journeys, round town or commute longer distances on higher speed roads).
It is vital for your safety and the safety of other road users to ensure that you scooter is correctly maintained. A regular service history is also important when trading your scooter for a newer model. Servicing is carried out at regular intervals but many of our items are related to mileage and the way you use your bike (for example do you use your scooter for short journey round town, commute longer distances, or use your scooter off road).
Yes with a full motorcycle licence on any scooter/motorbike.
The current prices for one year’s road tax are:

50cc - £18.00
125cc - £18.00
150-400cc - £41.00
401-600cc - £62.00
600cc+ - £85.00
In terms of fuel consumption most two-stroke scooters can achieve around 65 to 75mpg of unleaded petrol and a four-stroke model 125-250cc will achieve up to 90mpg but it does depend on things like the speed you pull off if you take it steady your petrol can last longer.
Subject to the make and model you purchase serving guidelines and price very it is best to check the manufactures handbook for these and if you would like a price please give us a call (01332 881 882).
For the ultimate protection and warmth it is worth investing in proper motorcycle clothing. A helmet is a legal requirement it is also worth while purchasing some good gloves as hands can get very cold and they are also good protection. A sturdy jacket, waterproof and armoured is best. We also recommend thick trousers, like jeans unless you purchase some waterproof or armoured trousers. Snug boots which can’t easily be pulled off are of benefit and bright florescent/reflective clothing is also recommended during dark nights and the dull winter period.

Motorcycle & Scooter Licencing Information

Moped Licence Requirements

A moped MUST have an engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc, not weigh more than 250 kg and be designed to have a maximum speed not exceeding 31 mph (50 km/h). From June 2003 all EC Type Approved mopeds have been restricted to 28 mph (45 km/h).

To ride a moped, learners MUST

-Be 16 or over
-Have a provisional moped licence
-Complete CBT training

You MUST first pass the theory test for motorcycles and then the moped practical test to obtain your full moped licence. If you passed your driving test before 1 February 2001you are qualified to ride a moped without L plates, although it is RECOMMENDED that you complete CBT before riding on the road. If you passed your driving test after this date you MUST complete CBT before riding a moped on the road.

If you have a provisional motorcycle licence, you MUST satisfactorily complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course. You can then ride on the public road, with L plates, for up to two years. To obtain your full motorcycle licence you MUST pass a motorcycle theory test and then a practical test.

Aged 19 or over: A2 Motorcycle Licence

At 19 can get an A2 Motorcycle Licence allowing you to ride a motorcycle or scooter with power up to 35KW (46.6 bhp) or a restricted version of a bigger more powerful model upto 70KW.

There are two ways to qualify for an A2 licence:

First if you have held an A1 Motorcycle Licence for 2 years, you can take another practical test.

Or second if you are 19 or older you can take the Direct Access route by completing your CBT and passing your Theory Test and Practical Tests.

You are then allowed to ride any A2 category motorbike or scooter without L plates and to carry a passenger.

After holding an A2 Motorcycle Licence for 2 years, you can take another practical test and get an unrestricted A Motorcycle licence
